Viveka, the protagonist of the Buddhist text, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, is a revered female exemplar in yoga philosophy. Despite being one of the most important texts leading to an understanding of yoga, historically it was largely believed that this text was authored by men -- which would make Viveka's gender status controversial. But her status as a significant figure in the history of Yoga might have actually been due to her being used as a cover for both men and women writing about yoga. This theory has since been confirmed through archeological discoveries that confirm that there were many individuals, both male and female authors who wrote about this topic during ancient India. In fact, the most recently discovered manuscript of yoga sutras includes a note from the author about his disciple, a woman. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, along with several other bodies of literature, where primarily written to address a problem that plagued Indian culture at that time- excessive desires and their pernicious effects on the mind. Although desire is necessary for survival and basic function of human beings, they become harmful when they go out of control. For example , desire for sex may help to perpetuate the human species but excessive sexual desire can harm one's health and lead to mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In order to regulate desire and keep it in check, Patanjali talks about a process of renunciation and sense withdrawal. This is called Yoga. The text is made up of four chapters that address the following topics: Yoga, Samadhi (meditative state), Mindfulness (meditative state), and the role of breath in both yoga practice and samadhi . Each chapter also includes various practical examples of yogic techniques mentioned in the text.
